SO EVELYN’S PARTY IS A THING THAT HAPPENED AND I SHALL NOW TELL YOU ABOUT IT.
So this evening I get home from school and decide, after much debate, on a black skater skirt, olive green cropped sweater, gold coin necklace, and dark brown combat boots. I sent a selfie to Lark and Emmalee, who approved.
Lark’s mom arrived to pick me up soon after. I squeezed into the backseat with Emmalee and Aidan, the latter of which had expectedly gone full-out as a wizard, with a fake beard and floppy hat and embroidered robe and staff and everything. “I was going to be a dragon,” he told me, “but I couldn’t get the paper mache to work.”
Lark was wearing a cropped pale pink sweater, jeans, black combat boots, and a gold necklace. Emmalee was in jeans and a sweater with a collared shirt underneath. She’d also French-braided back a section of her hair, which looked very pretty.
We arrived at Evelyn Spellman’s house and abandoned Lark’s mom in the car without a word. Evelyn greeted us at the door, but I wasn’t really listening, I was on High Christopher Alert, and I knew Lark was on High Myles Alert, which left Emmalee and Aidan to do the “Thanks for having us” bit with Evelyn.
We wandered into the front room, where a ton of the popular boys were sprawled around chairs and goofing about. Myles was there, and Lark immediately went over to join them. They greeted her as one of them, for most popular girls are the get-my-hands-dirty-no-way-this-is-prada type, but Lark, though girly, gorgeous, and obsessed with Taylor Swift, is also surprisingly strong, plans to go into the Marines, and can have a dirty sense of humor.
So Emmalee, Aidan, and I wandered into the dining room, where a whole buffet was set up. We hung around in a reading nook for a lot of the night, making fun of the other guests (we're such good people xD) and eating Halloween-themed desserts, when eventually I got hot and bored inside and wandered outside into Evelyn's giant backyard.
I found a spot on a bench around her fire pit. No one else was there - they were all on the deck or in the treehouse. I took a deep, refreshing breath of the cool night air and relaxed.
And then will you GUESS WHAT HAPPENED.
HE CAME OVER.
HE CAME OVER.
HE CAME OVER.
CHRISTOPHER CAME OVER.
AND HE SAT RIGHT NEXT TO ME.
I don’t think he saw me but my heart was pumping at a trillion miles per hour and I managed, “Hi.”
He turned and saw me. “Oh, hi!” he said. “Hey, you’re the girl with the highlights, aren’t you?”
"Yeah," I managed again, smiling.
"Yeah, they look really cool," he said.
I think I literally died.
"So, what classes are you taking?" I tried.
I learned that he was in Adv. Algebra, Adv. Science 9, Journalism, Acting, Spanish 1, English 9, and Technology for College and Business ("I'm not really interested in that one," he informs me, "My parents are making me take it since my older brother did and was such a success in the whole tech/business department, so.") I told him about my classes and we ranted about Ms. Snippet together. At one point he fished a pack of gum out of his pocket, popped a piece in his mouth, and asked me if I wanted any. I took a piece. Mint.
Eventually, he stood up and said he had to go. "See you around," I said.
"See you around," he replied, and wandered off.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
AND AND AND HE WAS WEARING THAT GREY HOODIE AND GODDAMN HE LOOKS GOOD IN THAT GREY HOODIE.
My immediate instinct was to run and tell Lark, Aiden, and Emmalee, but we're still at Evelyn's house and no one can overhear. So I texted them the whole incident (Emmalee responded with an analysis of how to best proceed with the relationship, Aiden with a couple of smiley faces and a "That's great", and Lark with a heart-eyes emoji.) At this point, a lot of the girls began to gather around the fire pit to make s'mores. Mrs. Spellman came out and lit it and I sat around with them and burnt marshmallows. They tried playing Truth or Dare, but the only thing they could come up with was "who do you like?" and that got pretty darn boring after a while.
Eventually, it was time to leave. I was wandering around the yard, trying to find Lark, when she bounded up to me, happy and flushed. I raised an eyebrow at her and she just gave me a smile back.
In the car ride home, I texted her.
Did you have sex? I asked.
No came the reply. We just made out and stuff. We might have sex next time though. I mean if there is a next time. I almost feel like I'm starting to get over him, you know? He was a gross/sloppy kisser.
Ugh said I.
At least we both made progress with our crushes she remarked.
I conceded to this. I wonder what will happen Monday with me and Christopher? Are we now at the place where we'll say "Hi" if we see each other in the hallways???? Or are we just on a smile basis??? Or even that? Idk. I hope it's something, though. At least now I know how to stalk him from class to class.
Love,
Waverly
